Germany · Founded 1916
Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft, trading as BMW Group, is a German multinational conglomerate manufacturer of luxury vehicles and motorcycles headquartered in Munich, Germany. The moniker "BMW " first came into use when the German firm Rapp Motorenwerke changed its name to Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH in 1917.
BMW began in aircraft engines, moved into motorcycles, then automobiles — building the “Ultimate Driving Machine” reputation through the 2002, 3 Series, and M cars. Today it spans combustion, plug-in, and battery-electric models (i4, iX) while keeping rear-drive dynamics central to the brand story. Used shoppers weigh driving feel against maintenance costs.
