Toyota grew out of the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works when Kiichiro Toyoda pushed the company into automobiles in the 1930s. After World War II it rebuilt around lean manufacturing — the Toyota Production System — and became a byword for durability and hybrid efficiency with the Prius. Today it remains one of the world’s largest automakers, spanning passenger cars, light trucks, and an expanding electrified lineup.
